Relevance-Based Partition Semantics for Why-Questions
نویسندگان
چکیده
This work argues that partition semantics can be extended to cover whyquestions and their answers, and then develops such an extension. Building on Jeroen Groenendijk’s Logic of Interrogation and incorporating a theory of why-questions initially put forward by Bas van Fraassen, it provides a unified notion of contextual answerhood for both why-questions and constituent questions. Non-constructive and constructive versions of the semantics are indicated, their meta-logical features are briefly explored, and two applications for the semantics are described.

Structured Information States { raising and resolving issues {
This paper proposes to combine update semantics with a partition semantics of questions. The resulting update semantics with questions (USQ) models a question as a change to the information-structure of an information state. Each information state is considered to be structured by one or more issues: salient questions in need of an answer. This makes it possible to clarify the notion of relevan...
متن کاملNegative Polarity Items in Questions: Strength as Relevance
The traditional approach towards (negative) polarity items is to answer the question in which contexts NPIs are licensed. The inspiring approaches of Kadmon & Landman (1990, 1993) (K&L) and Krifka (1990, 1992, 1995) go a major step further: they also seek to answer the question of why these contexts license NPIs. To explain the appropriate use of polarity items in questions, however, we need to...
متن کاملGoals and Structured Information
This paper investigates the role of a goal parameter in semantics. On the one hand, goals are necessary for a semantics of questions and answers. On the other hand, the eeect of underlying perlocutionary goals on information in context can be modelled as an issue or question-under-discussion. A logic, update semantics with questions (USQ), is presented that combines update semantics with a part...
متن کاملConditional Questions
This paper provides an analysis of conditional questions that combines a dynamic semantics for conditionals with a partition semantics for questions. We propose that conditional questions are interpreted in two steps. First, a temporary context is created in which the propositional content of the antecedent obtains. Second, the question in the consequent is asked relative to this temporary cont...
متن کاملSEMDIAL 2016 JerSem Proceedings of the 20th Workshop on the Semantics and Pragmatics of Dialogue
Even casual dialogue contains instances of reasoning. A paradigmatic case is the usage of Why-questions that intuitively elicit a reason for something. We present a thorough analysis of Why-questions in dialogue from a rhetorical perspective. We specify the semantics of Why-questions, i.e., we define what the space of acceptable answers is, how this acceptability is itself up for further negoti...
